FAQs

How do you match mentor/mentee pairs?

Matches are driven by a mentee’s goals and hopes for the program. However, we take a holistic approach considering all of the information we have available to us about mentors and mentees based on enrollment forms, self-assessment results (every participant takes the CliftonStrengths and True Colors assessments), and what we learn about a mentor during their interview.

Matching is the most challenging and important aspect of any mentorship program, and while lots of mentoring software platforms claim that algorithms alone can make excellent matches, we disagree. This means we use a blended approach that takes algorithmic suggestions and cross-checks them with our program staff’s knowledge.

What if I don’t click with my mentor or mentee?

Partnerships that don’t work out are a normal part of every mentorship program! What separates great programs from good (or just ok) programs is how the program intervenes. Guidepost takes a pro-active approach. First, we support the pair with coaching and mediation to see if get the pair on track. However, if things really aren’t working, we thoughtfully close out the relationship and re-match the mentee with another mentor.

How long is the program? What is the time commitment?

Our cohort programs are 9-months. On average, mentors and mentees can expect to dedicate 2-4 hours per month to the program. For detailed program logistics, click here for MENTEES or click here for MENTORS.

What do mentors get out of the program?

Mentoring relationships focus on the needs and development of the mentee, but the benefits for mentors are significant. From community and network-building with other mentors and mentees, to improved communication, active listening, and coaching skills, insight into the experiences of more junior-level employees, and opportunities for career reflection and development, mentors get a lot out of their participation.
